Default I feel like a bad mommy.....

I feel so awful, I was petting Zoe today and she rolled over on her belly and I noticed some gunky stuff on her chin. So I went to wipe it off........and OMG...she is missing a chunk of meat out of her chin all the way to her gum line!!! It is all yellow and crusty...looks like a few days old....stinks like a son of a gun!! How in hecks name did I miss that on her????

I cleaned it out and packed it with polysporin. She didn't act like it hurt her any. And she sure hasn't shown any signs of having a cut that bad on her mouth. I know she didn't eat for a couple of days but that is nothing new, sometimes she will go a few days without eating and then go back to regular eating patterns. And every morning she wakes me up with her muzzle stuck under the blanket and I give her nose kisses and rub her whole muzzle.....she never showed any signs of injury.

I am going to call the vet tomorrow morning, I don't know if she will need stiches....it is a very big hole. I could stick my thumb in it that is how much meat is missing.

I feel so awful....i still can't believe i missed something like that. Don't know if she got ahold of anything like a cat, squirrel....she isn't acting out of sorts. My poor baby!!

OMG poor Zoe! Sometimes stuff like that happens where you are just like "wow, I cant believe I missed this!"... it's not your fault. You're doing something about it once you found out.

I don't think she could've gotten an animal since your always watching her. Maybe she fell or ran into something while out in the yard if you looked away for a second. Sometimes dogs just don't show signs of pain like humans do.

Do you think it's really going to need stiches? I hope not. Hugs and kisses to Zoe from Philadelphia... I'm sure Maximus would give kisses too but I'm not home to ask

I honestly think it may need stiches..but that is coming from a human!!LOL. It is not bothering her in any way, she is not even messing with the huge blob of polysporin. She is eating, she is playing....right now she is showing her stuffie who the boss is. It is tear drop shaped, looks like it started to heal on her gum line, then there is the void that my thumb can fit in, and it is all full of pus and gunk and smells.

Thanks for the hugs.......I am still in shock.....she didn't even leave blood anywhere or she was a good cleaner upper. You would think that would have hurt, or would be hurting now with the infection in it. I know I would be crying.

All l can say is wow....unbelieveable.

That kind of thing almost makes me pass out. Boo had a long thorny thing stuck in his leg once and I didn't notice until we got home from the walk and I almost fainted. Poor buggers can take so much, eh?

Good luck at the vet. I hope it's not infected or anything.

Poor Zoe, poor baby, she seems to be ok though, and you're doing the best you can, don't beat yourself up too much. I hope all turns out at the vets

I really hope she's okay hun. Not to upset you.. but in people most injuries have a 6-8 hour time limit on stitches.. So they can offer you antibiotics.. But if they were to stitch it, I think they'd have to reopen it and clean it right out..

I really hope they have a solution to help her that doesn't suck for her

You're not a bad mom. Is it deep or big? I know when I was watching programs and dogs have imbedded collars, they don't even stitch those so I am hoping that they will just give you some ointment and let it heal on it's own.

Aww, Bogcat, you are such a good Mom, please don't beat yourself up.
I agree with MP & Melinda, if the injury is old, it really shouldn't be stitched closed at this point. I'm sure they'll clean it out well and put Zoe on anitbiotics.
Keep us updated, OK?

Default Poor Zoe!

BigCat, you're a great mom so don't feel bad. Antibiotics and ointment will clear it right up.
