Spencer cut his foot this morning on our walk. I didn't even know that it had happened. Trevor told me when I got home that he was limping around all day after I left. Trevor actually had to cut a piece of skin off because it was hanging there. Sorry for the details.
Anyway, I made sure to soak it when I got home and cleaned it. Before bed I plan to put Penaten or Poly Sporin on it and wrap it for the night. Is there anything else that I should be doing for it? It's really not deep, more like a layer of skin came off. I will try to get a picture later when he is laying down.

He cut it the winter before last too and it healed up nicely. I am hoping for the same this time.
The problem is that we are having a BBQ tomorrow and there will be a couple other dogs here. I am sure they will be running and playing all day. I don't know how I am going ot keep him off of it.

If it is not that bad of a cut, could you not just keep it wrapped? He should know when it is bugging him and lay down.......I know when Zoe cut her pad on the ice, she tried to stay off the foot without me telling her to. I just had to stop her from licking the meds off.

Spencer HATES his feet being wrapped. Luckily I had just bought more vet wrap so I figured I would just do it at night mainly so that he can get a few hour of meds onit. He will usually pull off whatever I put on it.

Honestly, what I would do for tomorrow is let him be, and when everybody leaves, clean it again really well.
I wouldn't bandage it just because it's so hot these days, and his paw would be swelling and unswelling depending on how hot he is and a bandage might cut off the circulation, even if you leave some leeway.

You wouldn't bandage it over night tonight either? We do have the A/C on so it's not too hot in here. I just wanted to get some cream on it and it would last about 1/2 a second if I don't wrap something on it.He's sleeping on the couch right now, at least he is finally giving it a rest.
BTW, he lets me touch it so it's not hurting him all that much. He is still limping a bit though when he hasn't walked onit for a bit and is talking his first few steps.

I'm more anal than most about wrapping... In exercise science, they taught us never to bandage at night because you swell when you sleep too...
![]() If he's going to lick it off, I'd put a sock on it with some fairly loose vet wrap around the top only, or I'd just put a bandaid on the pad itself.. The elastoplast tissue ones really stick to anything usually.... I just wouldn't compress the whole thing with elastic wrap or anything like that. |
