Default Update on the little girl who had her eye punctured..

Just thought I'd share an update on my friend's granddaughter.

The opthamologist estimates her sight at 80% in that eye right now - and says that as it continues to heal, it could improve even more. Her mom said that the cornea is punctured in one spot, and then scraped. The scrapes will heal, and although the puncture will heal, the sight in that spot will never return. I guess the body will fill in the hole from the puncture, but since the cornea does not have blood vessels, it doesn't actually heal the damage. She'll have a blank spot in her vision forever, kind of like having a spot on your glasses - you learn to look around it or ignore it. The scrapes right now make it look like "clouds in front of her eyes" as she puts it, but the doc says that will go away as the scrapes heal.

Her mom says that she is much more careful now, and that things she has had to fight with her about in the past (wearing pants & shoes & helmet while on her scooter, etc) are no longer fights, she puts on her safety gear with no prompting from mom.

The little mite was so cute - I asked her to come and show me which eye got poked, and she comes over - stands right in front of me and pries that eye open with her hands, holding it WAY open while pointing at it with one of the hands holding the eye open. LOL It looks good, and I couldn't see any places that were lacking color in the cornea, but obviously looks aren't everything. When I asked her if it felt better, she said that it felt okay, but she still couldn't see everything like she could before.
