My start of rehabbing

I thought I'd digress a bit, in fact, back to 8 yrs ago this week. My children were helping their father with yard work, they came running in all exited, "Mom, we found something..come see!!" so of course mom goes out to check, what they found was two squirming....."things"...about an inch long, with tails, cords still attached and eyes sealed shut, no fur and still dirty from birth, laying next to our elm tree. We had no idea what they were, now I'm a country girl and I still had no clue. We wrapped them in a cotton cloth and as told, left them right where we found them, the kids kept watch from neighbourhood cats. Now the fun, I called the ministry "wrap them up and toss them out", I called the SPCA "we don't deal with wildlife" I called our local trapper who helps to remove wild animals "you could have sewer rats, let a cat or bird eat em".....I had one of the ministry workers home phone number, his advice, leave them where they were found, cover them in hay/grass and the mom will come back if she's around, if not, they won't survive no matter what you do. So...we did...hubby went out the next morning after a frost and discovered, they were still there and alive, it had been almost 18 hours, so we set them under a heat lamp to warm them, called them Happy and Anni (our anniversary was in two days). I called a rescue in Ottawa and described what was going on, she had no idea what they were but suggest I feed them a pedialite to "clean them out", then the best bet is kitten formula which my local pet store opened to get me on a Sunday. The drug store gave me the tiniest syringe possible and the fun began, would you believe husband went and bought us a computer, hooked it to the net just for these two critters?? Our iguana just passed away so we installed them in his cage, the floor was heated and I monitored their heat, every two hours I would force feed them, keeping them inside my shirt for warmth, stimulate them to pee. By the end of the first week it was established that I had squirrels, I was in touch daily with the Ottawa rescue people, thank god for them!!! she told me that they must have been two weeks old when we found them because no one has kept babies alive that young. She would not believe the cords were still attached when we found them. By the end of 3 weeks, they'd wake me in the morning with shrill whistles *L* I'd open the huge door and out they'd jump, first on my shoulders then down my shirt to await their meal, cutest little red squirrels ever! Red squirrels had almost shrunk to nothing in eastern Ontario at the time and thats why the center was so interested in them. Donna dubrei (sp?) called me when they were six weeks old to ask if I'd consider allowing them to be released at a site in Ottawa, this man specialized in red squirrels and was thrilled that we had surviving babies. We had about a dozen stray cats at the time and a busy highway, as much as I loved them, I knew Ottawa country side was the best thing I could give them. So we packed them up, (plenty of tears) and drove them to the Nortel yard where the rescue shelter was situated, I brought along the album I'd kept from day one. When I showed Donna, she excused herself, when she came back she had another woman with her, they apologized for not believing just how young they were and told me they were less than 12 hours when found. They also (swelled my head) told me that as far as they knew, no one had ever succeeded like we had. We left there, after a last feeding which broke my heart because as I was walking away they started "whistling" for me to come back, my heart was broken....but I knew they'd have a great life with all the other reds, Donna kept me posted weekly up until they were released, I do know they each kept coming back and eventually left for good, hopefully with a mate and a long happy life. That was how word of my rehabbing got around, we've gone on to raise baby skunks, black squirrels and many many injured birds etc....I love it!! I couldn't post pics in here so I added some on our pet photo page http://iheartpaws.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=185 Hope that works.

Awesome! You seem to have an inborn instinct for helping animals; what a wonderful gift!
