Vizsla
Vizsla or the Hungarian Pointer is one of the oldest recorded sporting dogs in existence. This breed originated from Hungary and is a medium weight dog with a robust build, and are known to be an all-weather hunting dog. Its coat is of the russet-gold shorthaired coat and eventhough they lack an undercoat, it is smooth, shiny and greasy to feel. These dogs are self-cleaning dogs, needing baths once or twice a year.
Most Vizsla breeders dock the tails from one-third of the dog's normal tail length. These dogs attract attention because of their aristocratic air and elegant gait. The Vizsla accompanies its master during hunts and aids in the hunting of game. These breeds of pointers have been treasured by Hungarians and were considered royalty dogs since most of their former breeders were of noble birth or warlords.
As in all pointers, the Vizsla displays its form by rigidly sticking its nose straight out, aligning it with its back and tail, with one leg bent. This dog breed finds, points, retrieves and tracks game. They are fearless swimmers since most of their game is waterfowl. Through time, this breed has adapted physical characteristics that enable them to be good hunting companions and game trackers.
From the long line of Hungarian bred Vizsla, the present generation exhibits versatility. This breed is able to track game with it's keen sense of smell just like a bloodhound; this dog also points at game with the decisiveness of a Setter; it also displays might and staying power by being able to retrieve game even in the iciest of waters.
The Vizsla is an ideal sport and hunting companion since it is never particular in the game it is able to track. As sporting and hunting dogs they have made a reputation of excellence. When not used for sport, the Vizsla is known to be a loyal, mild-mannered and loving pet. These dogs form a bond not only with their owners, but also with the entire family. They are known to be one of the several dog breeds that are suitable for children too. As a pet, the Vizsla is a peaceful creature, barking only when prompted, provoked or in the line of hunting duty.
These dogs are natural hunters and trackers. To have them in top hunting-sport form needs minimal instruction and training. Though very calm and good-natured, this breed of dog is rather sensitive to gruff and harsh method of teaching. To fully maximize this dog for it's innate skills and it's trainable nature, Vizsla pet owners must be careful not to damage it's dogs’ temperament.
To maintain a Vizsla dog breed in tip-top shape, owners must schedule regular exercise and help cultivate their social skills. There are cases that Vizsla exhibit depression and engage in obsessive-compulsive behavior, if they do not maintain proper exercise routines.
This breed of dog is also one of the most intelligent in the family of canines. The Vizsla has a lineage that manifests itself in how the present genre conveys courage and bears the marks of an ideal hunting-sport dog. Proper care, training and attention will create a lasting bond between the Vizsla and it's owner
